Martha Bell Van Horn

Wife of Honorable M. D. Van Horn, the twenty-second Mayor of Denver, First Lady of Denver from 1893-1895. 

Her Story

Personal

Martha was born on August 6, 1845, and died in Denver, Colorad on January 27, 1916 (Age 70).  She now peacefully resides in Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Family

Mayor and Mrs. Van Horn moved to Denver in 1881. They lived on South Broadway until several years later when they moved downtown.

Of Note

Mrs. Van Horn and her husband were the proprietors of a hotel property known as the Grand Central Hotel, located on the corner of Wazee and 17th Streets. She ran the Hotel after her husband’s untimely death in 1895. Mrs. Van Horn was very supportive of the suffrage movement. The family also was involved in the financial and civic efforts to rebuild (a partially damaged) Union Station, a few short blocks from their hotel property.
