Virgina Shafroth Newton

Wife of Honorable J. Quigg Newton, the thirty-sixth Mayor of Denver. First Lady of Denver from 1947-1955. 

Her Story

Personal

Virginia was born in Denver, Colorado on February 3, 1920, and died in Boulder, Colorado on March 28, 2010 (Age 90). She resides peacefully at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Family

She was the granddaughter of John F. Shafroth who served as US Senator, Congressman, and then Governor of Colorado. Virginia was a third-generation Coloradan who graduated from Vassar College, earned a M.A. in Social Psychology from CU, and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from NYU.  The Newtons had four children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Of Note

Mrs. Newton was an advocate for women’s rights and education all over the world and was very involved with the Endowment for Arts and Humanities. She was a member of Denver’s Eclectics and the Women’s Forum. Virgina was also a noted classical pianist. All her life as an athlete, she was an avid tennis player well into her 80s. Often, she could be seen riding her bike around Denver. She worked as a counselor and as a consultant in inner-city schools in New York and later as a research consultant to the Rockefeller National Commission on Humanities at Stanford. She served as a trustee at Vassar College and as a director on the boards of the National Camp Fire Girls and Colo. Endowment for the Humanities.
