
Elizabeth Allen Sopris
Wife of Honorable Richard Sopris, the fifteenth Mayor of Denver. First Lady of Denver from 1878-1881.
Her Story
Personal
Elizabeth was born in Trenton, New Jersey on February 15, 1815. She died in Denver, Colorado on December 18, 1911 (Age 97). She peacefully resides in Riverside Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.

Family
Mayor and Mrs. Sopris were married in 1836, and had eight children and twelve grandchildren. The Sopris family moved to Denver in 1860. The Sopris residence was at 1337 Stout Street.

Of Note
Mrs. Sopris is known as the “Grand Old Lady” of the Pioneer Ladies' Aid Society and of the Colorado Pioneers' Association. Of all the Denver pioneer women, Elizabeth was the best known. She was quite influential in a variety of civic/social matters in Denver. In 1925, a memorial fountain was erected in Denver’s City Park in Mrs. Sopris’ memory. Her daughter (Indiana Sopris) is credited as the first woman teacher in Colorado.
