Eliza Pickrell Routt

Wife of Honorable John Routt, the seventeenth Mayor of Denver. First Lady of Denver from 1883-1885.

Her Story

Personal

Eliza was born in Springfield, Illinois on January 30, 1839. She died in Denver, Colorado March 22, 1907. Mrs. Routt now resides peacefully at Riverside Cemetery, Denver, Colorado.

Family

The Routts were married in May 1874 and moved to Denver in 1875. They had two children.

Of Note

Mrs. Routt was an early pioneer in the women's suffrage movement. In 1893, she became the first woman to register to vote in Colorado history. Eliza is also noted for establishing the Young Women's Christian Association, and also served on the Board of Trustees of  Colorado Women's College. She was the first woman to serve on the Colorado State Board of Agriculture, the governing body of Colorado State Agricultural College, which became Colorado State University. In addition, she was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 2008.
